Licence and reuse
Content is CC BY 4.0, code is MIT, and third-party figures are neither. What you may do, and how to attribute.
The short version: you may reuse, adapt and teach from this material, including commercially, as long as you say where it came from. Two licences apply, depending on which part you are taking, and some figures are not ours to license at all.

What you may do with the content
Under CC BY 4.0 you may:
- Teach from it. Run a module, a whole track or the technical course, in a classroom, a lab meeting, a summer program or a workshop.
- Change it. Cut it down, translate it, re-order it, replace the datasets with ones your learners can actually reach, disagree with it in the margin.
- Redistribute it, in any format, including as part of something you sell.
The one condition is attribution: give credit, link the licence, and say if you changed anything. You may not add legal or technical restrictions that stop anyone else doing the same.
You do not need to ask permission. If you are running something with this material we would like to hear about it — wgr@jhu.edu — but that is a request, not a condition.
How to attribute
For a page or a set of pages:

On a slide, a footer line is enough: NeuroTrailblazers · CC BY 4.0. If you modified the material, say so — “adapted from” does that work. For a formal citation, see Cite this site.
Figures are the exception — check every one
This is the part that catches people. A large share of the images on this site are electron micrographs, segmentation renderings and figures from other projects — H01, MICrONS, FlyWire, the Allen Institute, published papers. They are reproduced here under their own terms, which are sometimes narrower than CC BY 4.0 and which this project cannot widen.
So: the CC BY 4.0 grant on this site does not travel with a third-party figure. Before you put one in your own deck or paper, find the source named in the caption or the figure credit and check that source’s licence. Where a figure carries no credit line and is plainly a rendering this project produced, the site licence applies.
The same goes for the datasets themselves. Nothing here grants any right to H01, MICrONS, FlyWire, Hemibrain, MANC, BANC or any other volume; each portal sets its own terms, and you agree to them there.
Names and marks
CC BY 4.0 does not grant trademark rights. The name NeuroTrailblazers, the marks and
lockups in assets/brand/, and the names of the NIH BRAIN Initiative, BRAIN CONNECTS,
IC3 and APEX are not covered by these licences. Use them to say where material came from;
do not use them in a way that implies this program endorses your version of it.
