Lee and colleagues combined in vivo calcium imaging with EM reconstruction to test whether functionally similar pyramidal neurons are preferentially connected. They are — a result that MICrONS later revisited at scale.
What it is good for. A compact example of a hypothesis stated before the data were collected, with a null model, in a volume small enough to reason about.
What it does not support. Strong effect-size claims: the number of connected pairs recovered is small, and the confidence intervals are correspondingly wide.
